1) Psalm 1:1 NKJV
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful
2) Psalm 1:1 NLT
1 Blessed are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers
a. What does it mean to not follow the counsel or advice of the ungodly (GK: rasha, morally wrong, bad person, guilty or condemned)?
b. What does it mean to stand in the path or around with sinners (those that miss the mark)?
c. What does it mean to not sit or join in with the scornful or mockers (GK: luwts, to make mouths at, to scoff, to make a mockery, to interpret, to have in derision, a teacher, an ambassador)?
d. What are some current ways we tolerate these practices, and how does this hold us back from seeing more of God's blessing in our lives?
3) Psalm 1:2 - 6 NKJV
2 But his delight is in the law (Torah or Word) of the Lord, And in His law (Torah or Word) he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
a. What does it mean to meditate in God's word day and night? Is that possible, and why should we?
b. What does it mean to be like a tree planted by the rivers of water?
c. What does it mean to bear fruit in season and not withering?
d. Is what we do supposed to prosper? How's that working for us? Any thoughts?
e. What happens eventually to those that are without God?
4) 2 Peter 1:1 - 4
1 Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
a. Do we have the same kind of faith as the Apostle Peter had? Therefore, is faith our problem in seeing God's blessing?
b. How is the gift of God multiplied in our lives?
c. Is God withholding some good thing from us? So, what's the problem?
d. How do we partake of the divine nature?
e. Have we already escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust?
5) 2 Peter 1:5 - 11
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.
10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
a. What are we supposed to remember about our sins?
b. When can we see the blessings of God's kingdom?
6) 2 Peter 1:12 - 15
12 For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth. 13 Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, 14 knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. 15> Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease.
a. Why does Peter want to stir us up to remember these things?
7) 2 Peter 1:16 - 18 NKJV, 19 - 21 KJV
16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
a. Can Peter really mean that the Bible (a more sure word of prophecy) is more sure than hearing the audible voice of God? Why?
b. What is the light shining into a dark place?
c. What is Peter pointing to when he writes until the day dawn and the day star arise in our hearts?
d. What does it mean that the (Bible) scriptures are of no private interpretation?
e. Who inspired the Bible? Why is this important?
