Pray in This Manner

Part 2 of the Prayer Series

Pray in This Manner

1) Matthew 6:9-13 KJV

9 After this manner therefore pray you: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

10 Your kingdom come, Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

2) Our Father

a) Who was the first person to tell us that God was our Father? How was God seen before this revelation that He is our Father?

b) If God is our Father, what does that make Jesus?

c) What does that say about our inheritance, blessing, authority, protection, and life?

3) Which art in heaven

a) How can we have a father on earth and in heaven?

b) What perspective does God the Father have related to the life on earth?

4) Hallowed be Your name

a) Hallowed means sanctified. What does that say about His name?

b) Since God is holy and set apart from evil and imperfection, does He bring harm or evil upon us?

c) James 1: 13-14 NKJV

13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.

5) Your kingdom come, Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

a) Has God's kingdom come? Can it come more fully in the physical world?

b) Did Jesus fulfill the Father's will? Are we to continue to further God's will in our lives and in the world around us? How?

c) How do we know if something is God's will?

6) Give us this day our daily bread.

a) What do you think is included in our daily bread that we are to ask the Father for? Does this include more than food, shelter, and clothing? What about the other things we need to live in our society?

b) Is physical health part of our daily bread? How about love, joy, and peace?

c) What about meaning and purpose?

7) And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

a) Has God the Father already forgiven us our debts?

Ephesians 4: 32, 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

b) If a believer in Jesus is forgiven by God for their sins then what debts do we still have?

John 20:21-23 NKJV 21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

8) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil

a) Will God give us evil temptations or trials?

b) Here's another common but deeper perspective on temptations and trials:

Pearl of Wisdom: So the phrase "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one," in essence says, "Keep us from a season of testing, BUT if we do go through a season of testing, help us not participate in evil situations."

c) Did Jesus conquer evil and the evil one at the cross?

d) What should our position be toward evil in the world?

1Corinthians 15:25- 28 NKJV

25For He (Jesus) must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27 For "He has put all things under His feet." But when He says "all things are put under Him," it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28 Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.

e) Where does evil come from? How about good?

James 1:12-17 NKJV

12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

9) For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

1Chronicles 29:11 NKJV 11Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, And You are exalted as head over all.
