1) John 1:10 - 13 NKJV
10 He (Jesus) was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the sons of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
a. Who has the right to manifest as a son (or daughter) of God?
2) Galatians 4:1 - 7 KJV
Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differs nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; 2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. 3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
4 But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 6 And because you are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7 Wherefore you are no longer a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
a. How are sons of God different than His servants?
b. Should sons of God serve people or worship God and let God serve others through them?
3) 1John 3:2
Beloved, now we are the sons of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
a. Are we now God's sons?
b. Is it possible to receive more revelation about Jesus than we already have?
c. If we can receive greater revelation regarding Jesus while we live in this present world, can we also experience a greater revelation of our being sons of God?
4) Romans 8:14 - 17
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
a. Who are those that are led by the Spirit?
b. Is being led by the Spirit different than receiving the spirit of bondage?
c. What does it mean to suffer with Christ?
5) Romans 8:18 - 19
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.
a. Can we receive greater revelation of the glory of God while we live in this world?
b. Where is the glory of God to be revealed?
c. If creation is waiting for the revealing of the sons of God, and since we saw earlier that we are the sons of God right now, are we waiting on God or is He waiting on us?
6) Romans 8:20 - 25
20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. 24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.
a. Creation is ultimately waiting to be birthed into the glorious liberty of the sons of God. If we realize our own liberty, fruitfulness, and sonship in Christ now will the creation around us respond positively?
7) Romans 8:26 - 28
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
a. What does the Spirit help us with, and what do the groanings here remind you of?
b. Can praying in the Spirit help with the Spirit's prayer for us?
c. Do all things work for good together for everyone?
